The History and Tradition of Salvia

Salvia Divinorum is a plant, derived from the mint family. It has it’s origins mainly in Central and South America, the Sierra Madre mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico in particular. The plant grows in shady, moist spots and has hollow stems with fairly large leaves. It can grow to a height of about a meter and produce flowers that are white and purple in color.
The chemical in the plant, Salvinorin A, produces the salvia effects of hallucinations, auditory and visual distortions, dizziness and disassociation from reality. In higher doses, it can bring on nausea and excessive sweating.
The Salvia Plant has religious traditions with the mazateca shamans of Mexico who used the 
leaves to bring on visionary states of consciousness that they used during their healing sessions, sometimes to discover the cause of sick person’s illness. The shamans use Salvia, generally in the form of a concentrated tea, to take them into a “visionary world” where they are able to understand greater meanings and even foretell of things or even find something that had been lost. These spiritual uses of Salvia continue today.
It is generally believed that the Mazatecs did not discover Salvia Divinorum until after the conquest of the new world, due to the name that they gave to it: “hierba Maria” or “ska Maria Pastora” – both references to the Virgin Mary and sheep herding. Both are obviously originated from Christianity and sheep were introduced by the Spanish.
Salvia was first documented by a researcher in 1939, by anthropologist Jean Basset Johnson, who was investigating the use of psilocybe mushrooms among the Mazatecs. Salvia Divinorum wasn’t discovered by the “Western World” until the 1960′s, when R. Gordon Wasson, the famous botanist that gifted us with psychedelic mushrooms, brought back a specimen to study. Even then, Salvia remained obscure and relatively untapped until the 1990′s, when a researcher named Daniel Siebert began to dig a bit deeper with even more studies and was the one who discovered the “Salvinorin A” compound.
Since this time, Salvia’s popularity has obviously increased, as well as the attention that it’s received in the media.
